Overview
This chart summarizes common nails, screws and bolts used in framing, finishing and structural connections.
Common Nail Sizes
Common framing applications use 8d (2-1/2 in), 10d (3 in) and 16d (3-1/2 in) common or box nails. Finishing work typically uses 4d to 8d finishing nails.
Common Screw Sizes
Wood screws are commonly specified by gauge (#6, #8, #10, #12) and length. Structural screws must be used only where engineered and approved for the connection.
Common Bolt Sizes
Anchor bolts and through-bolts are commonly 1/2 in, 5/8 in and 3/4 in diameter. Always match bolt grade, washer and nut to the engineered connection design.
Notes
Verify corrosion protection (galvanized, stainless) where lumber is pressure-treated or exposed to moisture.
